Emergency Department and Alternate Level of Care

Reducing emergency department wait times and decreasing the time that people spend in hospital beds waiting for alternate levels of care is one of the priorities of Central LHIN's Integrated Health Service Plan 2010-2013.

The goals of our emergency department and alternate level of care planning priority include:

  • Reduce demand on emergency department services
  • Increase capacity and improve emergency department performance
  • Improve access to hospital services by reducing length of time people spend in hospital beds waiting for alternate levels of care
Investing in Care and Services for Seniors

In 2007, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced that $700 million would be available over a three year period to improve integration of the community care system for seniors in Ontario.  Under Aging at Home, Central LHIN will allocate about $106 million:

  • 2008/09 – $13.5 million
  • 2009/10 –  $33.6 million   ($20.1 million incremental increase)
  • 2010/11 –  $52.9 million  ($19.3 million incremental increase)

To develop a sustainable healthcare system for seniors in Central LHIN, we identified key objectives to act as guiding factors during the development of our 2009/10 plan. These include:

  • Support provincial priorities to reduce emergency room wait times and alternate level of care pressures
  • Build community support sector service capacity by enhancing year one projects, increasing services and building on prior investments
  • Leverage our investment to support our Integrated Health Service Plan priorities
  • Address gaps related to seniors care identified in our Health Service Needs Assessment and Gap Analysis and 2008/09 Aging at Home process
  • Strengthen linkages between the community care, CCAC, hospital and primary care sectors and non-traditional community leaders
  • Reduce inequitable access for disadvantaged and underserved groups
  • Meet our Ministry/LHIN Accountability Agreement indicators and align with Ministry priorities
  • Support the use of eHealth related tools aligned with strategy
  • Incorporate lessons learned from year one
  • Develop communications that highlight how Aging at Home is making a difference at a local level
